About this course
French and Swedish is an unusual and rewarding combination that spans two of Europe's most significant cultural traditions. French is one of the most globally distributed languages in the world, spoken across Europe, Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific and serving as the working language of major international institutions. It carries a literary, philosophical and cultural heritage of extraordinary depth, from Moliere and Voltaire through to twentieth-century existentialism and contemporary Francophone writing. Swedish, the most widely spoken of the Scandinavian languages, is the key to Scandinavia's distinctive culture, its highly regarded social model, and a rich literary and intellectual tradition from Strindberg and Ingmar Bergman to contemporary Scandinavian crime fiction and design culture. At University College London, this four-year full-time programme is taught within one of the UK's strongest language departments, combining specialist expertise in French studies with Scandinavian studies. UCL's Scandinavian section is one of very few in the UK with the depth to support serious undergraduate study of Swedish at degree level, making this combination genuinely rare and distinctive in British higher education. The typical entry tariff for this programme is around 168 UCAS points. You will develop high-level proficiency in both French and Swedish across speaking, reading, writing and listening, engaging with the literature, culture, history and contemporary society of both language communities. The programme is likely to include both classical and modern texts in each language, and you will develop the ability to engage with academic and cultural material at a level appropriate to specialist study at UCL's research-intensive environment. Graduates with fluency in both French and Swedish are genuinely rare, and this rarity is professionally valuable in several contexts. The Scandinavian nations are significant trading partners for the UK, with strong sectors in energy, technology, design and financial services. Roles in international business, diplomacy, translation and interpreting, journalism, publishing and cultural organisations that work between French-speaking and Swedish-speaking worlds are all accessible. The European institutions, which use French as a working language and have strong Scandinavian representation, are another destination. Postgraduate study in French, Scandinavian studies, translation, European studies or linguistics is a natural next step.
