About this course

French studies at university level encompasses language, literature, culture, history and ideas, with France and the French-speaking world as its focus. As an academic discipline it asks not just how to use the language fluently but how French has shaped and been shaped by some of the most significant intellectual, political and artistic movements of the modern world, from the Enlightenment and the Revolution to existentialism, structuralism and postcolonial theory. France's cultural and political influence extends well beyond its borders, and the francophone world encompasses countries and communities across Africa, the Caribbean, the Americas and the Pacific. At the University of Warwick, studying French Studies part-time allows you to develop your language skills and engage with this rich cultural tradition at a pace that works alongside other commitments. You will develop advanced proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and listening in French, and you will encounter literary texts, films, political writings and cultural documents that reward close critical attention.
