BSc Games Development (including a Foundation Year)
About this course
Games development is a multidisciplinary field that sits at the intersection of programming, design, art, and storytelling. The video games industry is now one of the largest creative sectors in the world, surpassing cinema and music in global revenue, and the skills needed to build games draw on software engineering, mathematics, visual design, narrative design, audio, and project management. A games development degree develops the technical and creative capabilities needed to contribute to this industry at a professional level. The University of Chester's four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year and a sandwich year with professional placement experience. The foundation year provides the technical and creative grounding needed before you engage with the more complex content of the degree, making the programme accessible to students who may not have prior programming or game-making experience. The sandwich placement gives you direct experience in a professional games studio or technology company before your final year, developing the industry awareness and practical skills that employers look for. You will study game design, programming, 3D modelling and animation, graphics, game engines and tools, physics simulation, AI in games, audio design, and professional practice, building a portfolio of playable projects across the programme. Graduates in games development go on to work as game developers, programmers, game designers, 3D artists, level designers, QA engineers, and technical producers in studios ranging from small independent teams to major international publishers. The technical skills developed by a games degree are also valued outside the games industry in areas such as virtual reality, simulation, interactive media, film VFX, and software development more broadly. Many graduates continue to develop their craft through further training, postgraduate study, or by contributing to the independent games scene.
