BA Garment Technology
About this course
Garment technology sits at the intersection of fashion design and manufacturing science, concerned with the technical production of clothing: the materials, construction methods, quality systems, and supply chain processes that translate a design concept into a finished garment at scale. Where fashion design focuses on creative and aesthetic decisions, garment technology asks how those decisions can be implemented in ways that are technically sound, economically viable, and increasingly sustainable. The global fashion and apparel industry needs practitioners who understand both the creative and the technical sides of this process. At Birmingham City University, this three-year full-time programme provides a comprehensive education that encourages innovation in both design skills and technical craftsmanship, with a focus on sustainability, systems thinking, and socioeconomic practice. You will study pattern cutting, garment construction, fabric technology, quality assurance, production management, and the ethical and environmental dimensions of fashion supply chains. The programme includes a sandwich year with a work placement, giving you direct professional experience in a garment technology, fashion manufacturing, or related industry context. Entry typically requires around 120 UCAS tariff points. Garment technology graduates work in fashion buying and merchandising, product development, quality management, supply chain management, technical design, and sustainability roles in fashion and retail organisations. The combination of technical knowledge with commercial and sustainability awareness is increasingly valued in an industry under pressure to transform its practices.
