BSc Geography (Human and Physical)
About this course
Geography in its fullest form bridges the natural and social sciences, asking both how the physical world works and how human societies interact with it. Human geography explores the patterns and processes that shape where and how people live, including urbanisation, migration, economic development, and inequality. Physical geography investigates the Earth's landforms, climates, ecosystems, and natural processes, from glaciation and river systems to soil formation and biodiversity. A combined human and physical geography degree gives you competence in both, along with the fieldwork and data skills that make geography one of the most practically versatile of the sciences. At Keele University, this three-year full-time accredited BSc gives you a deep understanding of Earth's landscapes and environments alongside the dynamics of human societies and their relationship with the natural world. You will develop skills in fieldwork, laboratory work, and spatial analysis, and engage with contemporary issues such as climate change, land use conflict, environmental management, and global development. The sandwich placement year gives you the opportunity to gain extended professional experience in a real working environment, such as environmental consultancy, a local authority, a research organisation, or a commercial firm using geographic information. A year abroad broadens your perspective and experience, and work placement experience is integrated throughout the degree. The combination of physical and human geography, together with fieldwork, laboratory, and digital skills, makes geography graduates highly employable across a wide range of sectors. Graduates go on to careers in environmental consultancy, urban planning, geographic information systems, sustainability and climate consultancy, education, the civil service, international development, and logistics. Many pursue postgraduate study in geography, environmental science, planning, or related fields. The versatility of the discipline means geography graduates work across virtually every sector where the relationship between people and place matters.
