BSc Geography (Physical) with Professional Experience
About this course
Physical Geography is the scientific study of the Earth's surface and the processes that shape it, from the formation of landforms and the dynamics of soils and rivers to the behaviour of the atmosphere, the cryosphere and the oceans. It is a discipline that addresses some of the most consequential questions of our time: how climate systems respond to change, how extreme weather events and natural hazards affect human populations, how landscapes evolve, and how the planet's interconnected physical systems function as a whole. Physical geographers work at the intersection of environmental science, Earth science, and the policy challenges that a changing climate poses. At the University of Reading, a university internationally recognised for its research in meteorology, climate science and environmental science, this four-year full-time programme deepens your understanding of how the physical environment works, responds and adapts to change. The embedded professional experience component of the degree sets it apart, giving you the opportunity to work in a relevant professional or research organisation as part of your studies, developing both practical skills and professional contacts. You will study geomorphology, hydrology, climatology, soils, remote sensing and GIS, and environmental management, engaging with the quantitative methods and field techniques that physical geography research demands. Reading's exceptional research environment means the teaching is directly connected to current scientific understanding. Graduates of Physical Geography programmes work in environmental consultancy, hydrology, climate science, environmental monitoring, planning, natural hazard management, government agencies, and research. Many pursue postgraduate study in environmental science, hydrology, climate change, or physical geography, progressing into research or specialist technical roles. The combination of scientific rigour and professional experience that this programme provides is a strong foundation for a career addressing the most pressing environmental challenges of our generation.
