BA Geography
About this course
Geography is the discipline that studies the Earth as the home of human life, examining both the physical processes that shape its surface and the human activities, decisions, and structures that transform it. It ranges from the formation of coastlines and the dynamics of climate systems to the political economy of cities, the forces driving migration, and the sustainability challenges that require understanding physical and human systems together. This breadth is both geography's challenge and its unique strength: it is one of the few disciplines that takes seriously the connections between the natural and the social worlds. At the University of Liverpool, this three-year, full-time degree develops expert knowledge and skills for interrogating the major challenges confronting society in the twenty-first century, including globalisation, geopolitics, population change, and sustainability. You will develop the ability to understand the range of different approaches to these issues and to examine how they interact, building both specialist knowledge and the kind of integrative thinking that geography uniquely enables. The degree includes a sandwich year, work placements, and the option of a year abroad, giving you professional and international experience that complements your academic study and opens up career paths in the wide range of sectors where geographical knowledge and skills are valued. Geography graduates are among the most versatile of any discipline, working in planning, environmental consultancy, local and central government, international development, the charity sector, research, education, and business. The combination of quantitative and qualitative skills, fieldwork experience, and the capacity to think across human and environmental systems is valued wherever complex, real-world problems need to be addressed. Postgraduate study in geography, environmental management, urban planning, or related fields provides routes to more specialised professional and research roles.
