BSc Geography with Environmental Mathematics
About this course
Geography with environmental mathematics is a programme that takes seriously the quantitative revolution that has transformed how geographers and environmental scientists understand and model the natural world. Geography provides the conceptual frameworks for understanding how the Earth's surface, atmosphere, and biosphere work and how human activity is reshaping them. Environmental mathematics adds the formal and computational tools needed to describe those processes precisely, develop simulation models, and extract meaningful patterns from complex datasets. At the University of Leeds, this three-year full-time degree lets you explore the processes that shape dramatic landscapes and the dynamics of the atmosphere and biosphere, examining how those processes can be described mathematically and represented in models. You will develop an appreciation of both the physical and mathematical dimensions of environmental science, and the course structure allows you to choose modules in human geography as well if you wish, giving you the flexibility to customise your learning. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you substantial professional experience in settings where geographical and mathematical skills are applied and the opportunity to engage with environmental questions in an international context. Graduates from geography with environmental mathematics programmes are well placed for careers in environmental modelling, climate science, hydrological research, ecological and environmental consultancy, geographic information systems, and quantitative research roles in the public and private sectors. The combination of spatial understanding and mathematical rigour is valued in roles that require both the ability to understand environmental systems conceptually and to model them formally. Government agencies, research institutes, the energy sector, and international environmental organisations are all significant employers. Postgraduate study in environmental modelling, physical geography, climate science, or data science is a natural continuation.
