About this course

Geography is an unusually broad discipline, spanning the physical processes that shape landscapes and climate systems and the human geographies of economy, society, and culture. It develops your ability to think across the boundary between natural and social sciences, using both quantitative and qualitative methods to address questions that are simultaneously environmental, economic, and political. The relationship between people and the physical environments they inhabit is one of the defining questions of our time, and geographers are well equipped to engage with it. At the University of Hull, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year that provides thorough preparation before the main degree begins. It invites you to discover how people shape the planet and how the planet shapes us, approaching geography as a discipline that is both intellectually stimulating and practically relevant. You will take part in inspiring field trips that take you out of the classroom and into real environments, including international destinations that give you direct experience of the geographical processes and social contexts you are studying. You will engage with physical geography topics including geomorphology, climatology, and environmental change, alongside human geography themes including urban development, economic geography, migration, and social inequality. You will develop skills in fieldwork, GIS and spatial analysis, research methods, and written communication, as well as the critical thinking needed to evaluate evidence and construct geographical arguments. Graduates go on to work in environmental management, urban and regional planning, sustainability, international development, GIS and spatial analysis, teaching, research, the civil service, and a range of other sectors. The breadth of a geography degree is valued by employers across many industries, and geographers are known for their ability to bring both scientific and humanistic perspectives to complex problems. Postgraduate study in geography, environmental management, or planning is a common next step.
