About this course

Geography and history is a pairing that examines the world through two fundamental and complementary lenses. Geography studies the surface of the Earth as the site of human living and working, examining how physical and human landscapes form, change, and interact. It develops spatial thinking, an understanding of environments and their dynamics, and the ability to analyse the human and natural processes that shape places. History examines how human societies have changed over time, recovering and interpreting the record of events, decisions, and forces that produced the present. Together the two disciplines offer an unusually rich and integrated perspective on how the world has become what it is. At the University of Glasgow, this four-year MA (Hons) programme includes a year abroad, giving you international academic experience in both disciplines. Glasgow is one of the UK's leading research universities, with strong traditions in both geography and history. The city's own complex history of industrial development, urban transformation, migration, and cultural change provides a rich backdrop for both subjects. You will study physical and human geography alongside historical content spanning a broad chronological and geographical range, developing skills in qualitative and quantitative data analysis, GIS, fieldwork, archival research, and historical argumentation. You will develop the ability to think spatially and historically, to work with different kinds of evidence, and to communicate complex analytical findings to different audiences. These are broadly applicable intellectual capabilities. Graduates from geography and history programmes pursue careers in research, education, heritage, the civil service, international development, environmental management, journalism, arts administration, and a wide range of other fields. The combination of spatial and historical analytical skills is valued by many employers. Postgraduate study in geography, history, environmental studies, or planning is a natural continuation.
