About this course

Geography and theatre studies is a part-time joint honours programme at the University of Glasgow that connects two disciplines with more in common than might initially appear. Geography is the study of the Earth's surface as the site of human living and working: it examines how physical and human landscapes are formed, how they vary across the globe, and how they interact with one another. Its concerns range from coastal management and environmental hazards to migration, urbanisation, and the political dimensions of space and place. Theatre studies examines how performance creates meaning, how theatrical traditions have developed historically, and how drama functions as a social and political art form. Together, the two disciplines encourage a distinctive kind of spatial and cultural thinking, asking questions about place, community, representation, and the material and human worlds we inhabit. The programme includes a year abroad. You will develop research and analytical skills in both disciplines, learning to work with qualitative and statistical data in geography and to interpret dramatic texts and performances in theatre studies. The year abroad gives you the opportunity to study in a different academic environment, encountering different approaches to both geographical inquiry and theatrical tradition. Glasgow's connections with the city's creative and cultural organisations add a practical professional dimension to the theatrical strand. Graduates from geography and theatre studies programmes move into careers in arts administration, community arts, cultural policy, environmental organisations, urban planning, education, journalism, social research, and a wide range of other fields where analytical thinking and cultural awareness are valued. Many continue to postgraduate study in geography, theatre, or related disciplines.
