MSci Geology with a Year Abroad
About this course
Geology is the science of the Earth, concerned with understanding the rocks, minerals, structures, processes and history that have shaped the planet over its 4.5-billion-year existence. It is a discipline that combines precise laboratory and analytical work with fieldwork in some of the most dramatic landscapes on Earth, and it addresses questions of both fundamental scientific importance, such as how continents move and mountain ranges form, and immediate practical relevance, including the location of mineral and energy resources, the assessment of geological hazards, and the characterisation of sites for infrastructure and waste disposal. At Imperial College London, one of the world's leading science and engineering universities, this four-year full-time programme combines traditional observational and field skills with numerical, computational, and analytical methods that allow the Earth to be understood more quantitatively. You will study the full range of geological disciplines, including sedimentology and stratigraphy, tectonics and structural geology, petrology, geochemistry, geophysics, and palaeontology, developing both the qualitative judgments of the experienced field geologist and the quantitative rigour that the discipline increasingly demands. The programme notes a year abroad in its title, providing the opportunity to study and undertake fieldwork in an international setting. Geology graduates from Imperial are in strong demand across the resources, energy, environmental, and engineering sectors. Careers include petroleum geology, mineral exploration, geotechnical engineering, hydrogeology, environmental consultancy, geological surveying, and academic research. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study to deepen their specialism or move into research. The combination of field skills, analytical capability, and quantitative understanding that Imperial's programme develops is a strong preparation for a wide range of professional and research roles.
