German and Hebrew is a language combination of considerable intellectual richness, bringing together two languages whose literatures, histories, and cultural traditions are deeply intertwined, particularly in the twentieth century. German is one of the great European literary and philosophical languages, a gateway to the traditions of Goethe, Schiller, Kafka, and Brecht, as well as to the science, philosophy, and cultural theory that shaped modernity. Hebrew links the ancient textual traditions of the Bible and rabbinic literature to the living language of the State of Israel and the vibrant contemporary literature and culture that has developed there. At University College London, which has exceptional resources in both Germanic studies and Hebrew and Jewish studies, this four-year full-time degree develops your linguistic competence in both languages alongside a deep engagement with their literatures, cultures, and histories. The four-year structure allows genuine depth of language acquisition alongside serious literary and cultural study. You will engage with classical and modern Hebrew texts and with the full range of German literary and intellectual history, and you will have access to UCL's outstanding library resources and research environment.
