About this course

German and Russian together offer access to two of Europe's most significant literary, intellectual, and political traditions. German has been the language of Goethe, Kafka, and Brecht, of Kant, Hegel, and Nietzsche, of one of the world's largest economies and a nation whose twentieth-century history continues to shape how we understand modernity. Russian opens the world of Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Chekhov, and Akhmatova, along with a geopolitical culture whose significance in the present moment is difficult to overstate. Studying both languages gives you a dual window onto the European continent and its eastern borderlands. At the University of Manchester, this four-year, full-time programme includes both a sandwich year and a work placement, meaning you will spend time in a professional environment where your language skills are put to real use, and in contexts where German and Russian are spoken and studied. Manchester has an outstanding languages faculty, and you will develop your spoken and written competence in both languages to an advanced level while also studying literature, film, history, and culture in each tradition. The placement and sandwich year structure means that by the time you graduate you will have had substantial experience of using your languages in demanding, real-world settings. A typical entry tariff of 152 UCAS points reflects the rigour of the programme. Studying two languages simultaneously is intellectually demanding in the best sense. You develop sensitivity to how different linguistic structures shape thought, how translation choices carry ideological weight, and how cultural context transforms the meaning of texts and utterances. Graduates move into careers in international business, diplomacy, translation and interpreting, journalism, the civil service, education, and the cultural sector. Advanced proficiency in German and Russian is genuinely rare and commands attention from employers across many fields. Postgraduate study in languages, area studies, translation, or international relations is a natural next step for many.
