MA German and Russian
About this course
Studying two languages to a high level is one of the most demanding and rewarding things you can do as an undergraduate. German and Russian are linguistically rich and culturally distinct, each with its own literary tradition, philosophical heritage, and political history. German offers access to the thought of Goethe, Kafka, and Brecht, the intellectual legacy of Weimar and the Cold War, and the economic and political weight of modern Europe's largest nation. Russian opens the vast literary landscape of Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, and Chekhov, the history of the Soviet period, and the distinctive grammar and script of one of the world's most widely spoken Slavic languages. At the University of St Andrews you will study this four-year MA (Hons) programme and develop language and communications skills to a high level of proficiency in both German and Russian. You will follow your own particular interests by choosing from a broad range of course options that reflect and explore the rich cultural heritage of the German-speaking lands and the Russian-speaking world, covering literature, history, film, and contemporary society. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the chance to live and study in relevant language communities and deepen your fluency and cultural understanding through genuine immersion. You will develop skills in linguistic analysis, translation, literary criticism, and independent research, working with primary sources in both languages. Fluency in two European languages, combined with deep cultural knowledge, opens a wide range of career paths. Graduates pursue roles in diplomacy, international business, the civil service, journalism, translation, interpreting, law, and finance. The research, analytical, and communication skills developed by studying languages at this level are valued by employers across sectors. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in linguistics, translation studies, area studies, or international relations, and some train as professional translators or interpreters.
