About this course
German studies is one of the richest and most rewarding disciplines in the modern languages curriculum, giving you access to a cultural and intellectual tradition that has shaped Western thought, music, philosophy, and literature in ways that few other languages can match. The German-speaking world, encompassing Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and parts of Belgium and Luxembourg, has produced Goethe and Kafka, Beethoven and Brahms, Kant and Hegel, Einstein and Freud, and a tradition of political and social thought that continues to shape how we understand modernity, democracy, and the relationship between the individual and the state. At the University of Warwick, this four-year full-time programme offers the opportunity to explore the extraordinary breadth and depth of German language and culture in collaboration with recognised experts in the field. A sandwich year with work placements is available, allowing you to gain professional experience in a German-speaking environment, which might be a company, a cultural organisation, or an academic institution. You will develop your German language skills to a high level of proficiency across all modes, engaging with contemporary and historical texts, film, media, and cultural production alongside the linguistic training that makes that engagement fully accessible. Warwick's strong research profile in German and comparative literature provides an intellectually stimulating context for the programme. Graduates from German studies programmes go on to careers in translation, interpreting, teaching, international business, journalism, publishing, the civil service, diplomacy, and cultural organisations. German language competence is particularly valued in the many UK companies and organisations that have German business partners, operations in German-speaking countries, or that work within European institutions where German is a working language. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in German literature, linguistics, European studies, or translation, and some pursue academic careers or professional roles in German-speaking countries.
