BA German
About this course
German is one of the most important languages in Europe, spoken by around 100 million people as a first language and serving as the primary language of the continent's largest economy. It carries a literary and intellectual tradition of extraordinary depth, from Goethe and Schiller through Kafka and Brecht to the major movements in philosophy, music, science, and technology that have shaped modernity. Studying German at degree level develops genuine high-level fluency alongside a sophisticated understanding of German-speaking culture, society, and history in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. At the University of Leeds, this four-year programme builds high levels of oral proficiency, professional communication, and written language competence. A compulsory year abroad, fully immersed in a German-speaking country, is central to the programme's design, recognising that day-to-day practice in the language is essential to developing real fluency that goes beyond the classroom. You will develop a unique insight into German culture and society and acquire the skills in critical analysis, research, and communication that make languages graduates highly attractive to employers across many sectors. The programme includes a sandwich placement year and embedded work placement opportunities, meaning your professional exposure is further developed alongside your academic study. German graduates work in international business, finance, law, diplomacy, journalism, translation and interpreting, publishing, cultural organisations, education, and a wide range of other fields where knowledge of Germany and the German-speaking world adds direct value. The combination of linguistic fluency, cultural knowledge, and analytical skills the degree develops is valued by any employer with a European or international dimension to their work. Further study at postgraduate level in German studies, translation, European history, or international affairs is a common route for those wishing to specialise.
