German is one of the most important languages in Europe, spoken by around 100 million people as a first language and serving as the primary language of the continent's largest economy. It carries a literary and intellectual tradition of extraordinary depth, from Goethe and Schiller through Kafka and Brecht to the major movements in philosophy, music, science, and technology that have shaped modernity.
