About this course

Global philosophy and worldviews combined with psychology brings together the widest-ranging intellectual tradition and the most scientific study of the human mind, asking both what people across different cultures have made of the fundamental questions of existence, value and knowledge and what empirical psychology reveals about how human beings actually think, feel and behave. Global philosophy and worldviews takes a genuinely cross-cultural perspective, moving from African philosophy and Chinese ethics through Hindu explorations of the soul and Islamic political thought to Jewish existentialism and Buddhist mysticism, examining the traditions that continue to evolve and shape the modern world. Psychology applies the scientific method to understanding these same human beings, investigating cognition, motivation, emotion, development, mental health and social behaviour. At Liverpool Hope University you will study for three years full-time, exploring the big questions of truth, value and what it means to be human in both philosophical and psychological dimensions. The programme includes a sandwich year in professional practice and a year abroad, giving you extended professional and international experience alongside your academic studies. You will develop skills in philosophical analysis, cross-cultural understanding and psychological research, building a dual perspective on the human condition that neither discipline alone can provide. Graduates are well placed for careers in education, interfaith dialogue, counselling, community development, mental health support, social research, the public and voluntary sectors and a wide range of roles that require both philosophical depth and psychological understanding. Many go on to teacher training in religious education, personal development or psychology, or pursue postgraduate study in psychology, philosophy, counselling, theology or intercultural studies. The unusual breadth of the combination is a genuine asset in any professional context where understanding different cultural frameworks and human behaviour are both important.
