BA Graphic Design
About this course
Graphic design is the practice of visual communication, shaping how ideas, information, and identities are expressed through visual means. It encompasses typography, layout, image-making, branding, digital interfaces, motion graphics, and the full range of print and screen contexts in which designed communication reaches its audience. The most effective graphic designers are visual thinkers who understand not just how to make things look compelling but how to make them communicate with precision and purpose. At Loughborough University, the BA (Hons) Graphic Design has a reputation for developing students as visual thinkers who excel in the creative industries. The programme combines rigorous studio practice with a strong conceptual and theoretical foundation, ensuring that your design decisions are grounded in understanding as well as instinct. You will develop skills in typography, visual identity, editorial design, digital design, motion, and brand strategy, working on projects that range from detailed technical exercises to open-ended creative briefs. Contextual studies in design history and theory develop your ability to situate your work within broader cultural and professional conversations, and to articulate what you are doing and why. This is a three-year full-time programme with a typical entry tariff of 168 UCAS points, reflecting the high level of creative and academic ability expected of applicants. Graduates from graphic design programmes at Loughborough go on to careers as graphic designers, brand designers, art directors, UX designers, creative directors, typographers, and motion designers in studios, agencies, in-house teams, and as freelancers. The combination of conceptual rigour and technical skill that the programme develops is particularly valued by employers who need designers who can think as well as make. Further study options include postgraduate degrees in graphic design, visual communication, and design research.
