BA Graphic Design
About this course
Graphic design shapes how the world looks and how information reaches people. Typography, layout, image, colour, branding, signage, packaging, digital interfaces, and motion graphics are all within its scope, and the designer's task in each case is to make communication effective, clear, and, where appropriate, beautiful. It is a discipline that rewards both analytical thinking and creative invention, requiring designers to understand what they are communicating, to whom, and why, before asking how that communication might best be realised. At Sheffield Hallam University, this three-year full-time programme prepares you for a career in the expanding field of graphic design through projects that respond to social, technological, economic, and political challenges. You will develop skills in typography, branding, visual identity, editorial design, digital design, and motion graphics, working with professional industry-standard tools and building a portfolio that demonstrates your creative range and problem-solving capability. The programme emphasises design as a socially responsible practice, developing your awareness of the ethical and political dimensions of visual communication alongside your technical competence. The course includes a foundation year that provides a structured entry point, and a sandwich year with work placement that gives you direct professional experience before you graduate. Graduates from graphic design programmes go on to work as graphic designers, art directors, brand designers, typographers, digital designers, UX designers, and illustrators in studios, agencies, in-house design teams, and as freelancers. The skills in visual thinking, problem-solving, and communication that a Sheffield Hallam graphic design degree develops are valued across the full range of creative industries. Further study at postgraduate level in graphic design, visual communication, or design research is available for those who wish to deepen their expertise.
