BA Graphic Design
About this course
Graphic design is the discipline of visual communication, concerned with how images, typography, colour, and layout are used to convey meaning, guide attention, and shape experience. From brand identities and editorial design to screen interfaces, wayfinding systems, and public information campaigns, graphic designers operate across a vast range of contexts, all of them involving decisions about how visual and textual elements can work together to communicate clearly and compellingly. The discipline requires both creative imagination and systematic problem-solving. At Sheffield Hallam University, this programme prepares you for a career in the expanding field of graphic design through projects that respond to social, technological, economic, and political challenges. You will develop the professional skills and knowledge needed to start your career and create design solutions for the future, working across print, screen, and emerging digital formats. The programme includes a foundation year for students who benefit from additional creative and academic preparation before the main degree. It also incorporates a sandwich placement year and a work placement, ensuring that your learning is grounded in professional practice. The programme is studied part-time. Graduates of graphic design programmes work as graphic designers, art directors, brand designers, packaging designers, digital designers, and UX designers in agencies, in-house design teams, publishing companies, and as independent practitioners. The visual communication skills the degree develops are valued across advertising, digital media, education, and the broader creative economy. Many graduates develop portfolio careers that combine commercial work with self-initiated projects, or go on to postgraduate study in design or visual communication to develop a more specialised practice.
