BA Graphic Design
About this course
Graphic design is the practice of communicating visually: using typography, image, colour, and layout to convey information, evoke feeling, and shape how audiences understand and respond to the world around them. It is a discipline that has expanded enormously in the digital era, moving from print into screen, moving image, user interface, and interactive media, while retaining at its core the skills of visual thinking, compositional judgement, and the ability to create solutions that work for specific audiences and purposes. Good graphic design is invisible; poor graphic design is immediately felt. At the University of Hull, this three-year full-time programme teaches you to create effective visual solutions across a range of contexts and platforms. You will develop your skills in typography, visual communication, digital design, branding, editorial, and the use of industry-standard software, building both technical fluency and the critical thinking needed to make design decisions that are purposeful rather than arbitrary. The programme places particular emphasis on preparing you for the competitive professional environment, ensuring you graduate with the practical capabilities and the portfolio to enter the job market with confidence. You will work on live briefs and project-based assignments that reflect the kind of work designers do in practice. Graduates from graphic design programmes find work across a wide range of commercial, cultural, and social contexts. Careers include brand designer, art director, motion graphics designer, UX and UI designer, typographer, packaging designer, editorial designer, and creative director. Many graduates work in design studios or advertising agencies, while others move in-house to businesses, cultural organisations, or public sector bodies. Some establish their own practices. The skills developed on a graphic design degree are also highly applicable in digital marketing, communications, publishing, and the broader creative industries. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in design, art direction, or a specialist area of visual communication.
