BA Graphic Design
About this course
Graphic design is the discipline concerned with the visual communication of ideas, information and identity through the organisation of type, image and space. It encompasses branding and identity, editorial design, digital interface design, motion graphics, packaging, environmental graphics and the full range of contemporary visual communication forms. Graphic designers work with clients and audiences to create visual systems and artefacts that communicate clearly and with purpose, combining creative vision with technical skill and an understanding of how visual elements create meaning and response. At the University of Westminster, this three-year programme develops a broad range of creative, technical and professional skills, using these to respond to industry-standard briefs and collaborative project work. You will develop your ability to conceptualise and execute design solutions across print and digital media, building a portfolio that demonstrates range, quality and professional competence. A sandwich placement year gives you substantial industry experience, and a year abroad adds international perspective to your design education. Work placement opportunities are integrated throughout the programme, ensuring you develop professional contacts and practical knowledge before you graduate. Westminster's location in London places you in one of the world's great centres of design and creative practice. Graphic design graduates pursue careers across an enormous range of contexts. In-house design roles within brands, retailers, publishers and media companies, studio-based roles in branding and design agencies, freelance practice and digital design roles are all common destinations. The rise of digital media has created substantial demand for designers who can work across screen-based environments, including user interface design, motion design and digital branding. Some graduates move into art direction, creative direction or typography specialism. Postgraduate study in graphic design, user experience design or visual communication is available for those who want to develop a research practice or specialise further.
