BA Graphic Design
About this course
Graphic Design is the practice of visual communication, the art and craft of using typography, image, colour, layout and composition to convey ideas, information and identity in ways that are simultaneously clear, aesthetically considered and purposeful. From brand identities and advertising to editorial design, packaging, signage, digital interfaces and motion graphics, graphic designers shape the visual environment that surrounds us in everyday life. The discipline demands a combination of creative vision, technical skill and the ability to think critically and strategically about communication problems and their solutions. At the University of Chester, this full-time three-year programme includes a year abroad, broadening your creative and cultural perspective through exposure to different design traditions and contexts. You will develop a strong creative practice grounded in critical thinking, practical experimentation and an understanding of the historical and contemporary design landscape. The programme fosters innovation, visual intelligence and entrepreneurial thinking, equipping you with the skills to contribute to the competitive global design market. You will build a professional portfolio of work across a range of briefs and contexts, developing both your creative range and your ability to communicate your design decisions clearly and confidently. Graphic Design graduates go on to careers in design studios, advertising agencies, in-house design teams at major brands and organisations, publishing, packaging design, digital design and UX, motion graphics, brand strategy and art direction. Many designers work freelance, particularly after gaining some initial studio experience. The combination of visual intelligence, technical competence and communication skill the degree develops is also valued in marketing, media, the creative industries more broadly and in entrepreneurial contexts. Postgraduate study in graphic design, visual communication, typography or related fields is a natural option for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or a research dimension to their practice.
