BA Graphic Design
About this course
Graphic design shapes how information is communicated visually, from brand identities and packaging to digital interfaces, editorial layouts and environmental signage. It is a discipline rooted in problem-solving: understanding an audience, clarifying a message and finding a visual form that communicates with precision and impact. Strong graphic design draws on art historical knowledge, typographic understanding, colour theory and an awareness of the contexts in which work will be encountered, and it increasingly operates across both print and screen. At the University of Gloucestershire, this three-year full-time programme develops your visual thinking and technical skills within a creative environment that values experimentation alongside professional preparation. You will work through briefs that push your ideas from concept to finished execution, building a portfolio that reflects your range and your developing design identity. The course gives you exposure to industry through live briefs and work placements, connecting your academic work to the realities of professional practice and giving you direct experience of how design operates commercially. Gloucestershire's programme has produced graduates who have gone on to work with well-regarded design studios and clients across different sectors. Graphic design graduates work in branding and identity, print and digital publishing, user experience and interface design, advertising, packaging, motion graphics and illustration. Many work in design agencies or as in-house designers for organisations across the commercial, cultural and public sectors. Others build independent practices or freelance careers. The combination of visual problem-solving skills and portfolio work developed during the degree also supports progression into postgraduate study in design or related creative disciplines.
