About this course

History is one of the few disciplines that genuinely helps you understand why the world is as it is. It trains you to ask how things came to be, who made decisions and why, and how the past continues to shape the present, whether in politics, economics, culture or social life. Understanding the forces behind events, the perspectives of those involved and the ways in which historical narratives are constructed and contested is an education in critical thinking that has broad value in a fast-changing world. At Edge Hill University you have the freedom to follow the historical periods, themes and regions that matter most to you, exploring questions of power, identity, conflict, memory and social change across different times and places. You will develop skills in researching and interpreting primary sources, constructing arguments from evidence and writing with precision and clarity. The programme runs full time over three years and includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you direct experience in professional and international contexts alongside your academic study. These opportunities might take you into archives, cultural organisations, educational settings or policy environments, broadening your perspective and strengthening your employability. History graduates are consistently valued by employers for their analytical rigour, communication skills and capacity to handle complexity and ambiguity. Careers span law, journalism, the civil service, heritage and museums, education, publishing, broadcasting, politics, international development and the voluntary sector. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in history, archival science, international relations, public policy or law, either pursuing research or building professional qualifications that complement their undergraduate foundation.
