About this course

History of art is the critical and historical study of visual culture across time and place, from ancient sculpture and medieval illuminated manuscripts to Renaissance painting, modernist abstraction and contemporary installation art. It asks not just what works of art look like, but what they mean, how they were made, why they were commissioned, how they have been interpreted and reinterpreted, and what role they play in the cultures that produce and receive them. In a world increasingly defined through images and material culture, the skills of visual analysis and cultural interpretation that art history develops are valuable well beyond the study of art itself. At the University of Leeds, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year in professional placement, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you substantial practical and international experience alongside your academic study. You will explore artistic practices and their interpretations across an exceptionally wide range of cultures and periods, developing a comparative and historically informed understanding of how art has functioned in different social, political and religious contexts. The programme uses art history as a framework for engaging with some of the most pressing contemporary questions about identity, representation and cultural value, training you to read images and objects with the same precision and depth that literary scholars bring to texts. Graduates from history of art programmes pursue careers in museums, galleries and the cultural sector, as well as in auction houses, art publishing, journalism, heritage management, arts administration, education and the creative industries. The visual literacy, research skills and cultural knowledge developed through art history are also valued in advertising, design, communications and the media. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in art history, curating, cultural studies or museum studies, and the degree provides an excellent foundation for careers in arts leadership and cultural policy.
