BA History of Art with Italian (with a year abroad)
About this course
History of art with Italian and a year abroad is a combination that enables you to develop genuine linguistic competence in Italian while simultaneously gaining a deeper understanding of the cultural contexts in which the art you study was created. Understanding Italian opens direct access to some of the most significant art historical traditions in the world: from the Renaissance courts of Florence and Venice through Baroque Rome to the futurist movements of the twentieth century, Italian art and culture have shaped the Western tradition profoundly. Language and art history reinforce each other: the cultural immersion that comes from speaking Italian enhances your historical understanding, and art history gives your language learning a rich and specific cultural content. At the University of York, this four-year full-time programme combines the critical and historical study of art across periods and traditions with Italian language instruction at progressively advanced levels. You will develop your ability to read, analyse, and write about works of art with rigour and depth, alongside genuine communicative proficiency in Italian. A sandwich year in industry and a work placement are part of the programme, giving you direct professional experience in art history, the museum sector, or Italian-speaking professional contexts. The year abroad, which is built into the title of the degree, provides the immersive language and cultural experience that transforms your Italian from classroom knowledge to real competence. With a typical entry tariff of 152 UCAS points, this programme attracts students combining cultural curiosity with a commitment to developing real language skills. Graduates pursue careers in museums and galleries, arts administration, auction houses, art criticism and journalism, heritage management, cultural tourism, education, publishing, and the many commercial and cultural roles where art history and Italian-language ability are valued in combination. Many continue to postgraduate study in art history, museum studies, Italian, or cultural heritage.
