About this course

History of art and Russian is an ambitious pairing that opens up one of the richest artistic traditions in the world through both its images and its language. History of art seeks to understand how and why paintings, sculptures, buildings, and works of design come to look the way they do, examining the social, cultural, and intellectual contexts that shape visual production and the ways in which art objects carry and transform meaning across time and place. Russian opens up a literary, cultural, and artistic tradition of extraordinary depth, from the icons of medieval Rus to the avant-garde, and from nineteenth-century realism to Soviet and post-Soviet art and cinema. At the University of Glasgow this five-year programme includes a sandwich year and work placement experience, giving your studies a genuinely professional dimension alongside the academic depth of two demanding disciplines. You will develop skills in art-historical analysis, archival research, and critical writing alongside Russian language proficiency, and you will be able to engage with Russian art, architecture, and visual culture through the original language as well as through art-historical scholarship in English. The five-year structure in Scotland provides a broader foundation than a shorter programme elsewhere, and the placement experience connects your learning to professional practice in galleries, archives, or cultural organisations. Graduates from art history and language combinations work in museums and galleries, auction houses, heritage organisations, cultural diplomacy, arts journalism, publishing, and education. Knowledge of Russian is particularly valued in roles relating to Russian and Eastern European art, cultural exchange, and institutions with collections or programmes connected to that tradition. Further study at postgraduate level in art history, Russian studies, museum studies, or curating is a natural next step for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or pursue a research career.
