BA History
About this course
History is one of the most intellectually ambitious disciplines available at university level, asking you to engage imaginatively with the past in order to understand the present more clearly. It is not the memorisation of dates and events but the serious effort to reconstruct, interpret, and argue about what happened and why, using primary sources, evaluating competing accounts, and developing the analytical and argumentative skills that allow you to reach and defend well-grounded conclusions. History develops a worldview-challenging perspective, confronting you with the contingency of the present and the extraordinary diversity of human experience across time and place. At the University of Sheffield, this three-year, full-time degree is taught by specialist experts who bring genuine research depth to their teaching. You will study past societies from across the world, developing advanced analytical skills, learning to decifer diverse viewpoints, and building the ability to express yourself fluently and persuasively in writing. The programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, which give you professional and international experience alongside academic study and significantly strengthen your employability. History graduates are among the most employable across all disciplines, precisely because the skills that history develops are valued so broadly. The ability to read complex material critically, construct evidence-based arguments, communicate clearly in writing, and think systematically about cause and consequence transfers across law, journalism, public policy, the civil service, education, finance, management consultancy, and the cultural sector. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in history, law, journalism, politics, or related disciplines, while others move directly into careers in which their analytical and communicative abilities are immediately valued.
