BA History
About this course
History is the study of the human past in all its complexity, asking how societies and cultures have changed over time, how decisions made in the past continue to shape the present, and what the evidence of earlier eras can teach us about what it means to be human. It trains you to interrogate sources critically, to recognise the difference between evidence and interpretation, and to construct well-reasoned arguments about complex events and processes. The skills it develops, including research, analysis, critical thinking and clear writing, are among the most broadly applicable that any degree can provide. At the University of Derby this degree is offered with a foundation year, as well as with a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you a wide range of options for deepening your experience during your studies. The programme engages your research and creative skills in ways that connect academic history to the wider community, with opportunities to work on projects with international arts and heritage organisations. Derby's approach to history emphasises using the past to benefit and inform the present, connecting your studies to the real social and cultural questions that heritage raises today. History graduates go on to an exceptionally broad range of careers. Many find roles in teaching, heritage management, museum and gallery work, archiving and cultural organisations. Others work in journalism, broadcasting, the civil service, public policy, law, consultancy, public relations and the third sector. The analytical and communication skills that a history degree develops are valued by employers across almost every professional field. For those wishing to continue their studies, the degree provides excellent preparation for postgraduate work in history, education, museum studies, heritage management, public history or archival science.
