BA History
About this course
History is the discipline that asks how we know what happened in the past, what it means, and how it connects to the present. Historians learn to read evidence critically, to understand documents, objects, and traces in their contexts, to weigh competing interpretations, and to construct argued accounts that are both honest about uncertainty and illuminating about the forces that have shaped human life. It is a discipline that trains intellectual rigour and curiosity in equal measure, and the skills it develops, including research, critical thinking, and written argument, are among the most transferable available in higher education. At Lincoln, this three-year full-time programme is taught by historians whose research covers a wide range of periods, places, and themes, giving you access to teaching that reflects current scholarship across the discipline. You will study history across different periods and geographical contexts, developing a broad and deep understanding of how the past has been shaped by political, social, economic, and cultural forces. A sandwich year in industry and a work placement are built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to apply your skills in professional settings, whether in archives, heritage organisations, educational institutions, journalism, or other contexts where historical thinking is valued. History graduates are highly regarded by employers across a wide range of sectors, precisely because of the analytical and communication skills the degree develops. Careers in journalism, law, the civil service, education, heritage, archiving, publishing, policy research, and management are all natural destinations. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in history, public history, archives and records management, or related fields. History is one of the most versatile undergraduate degrees available, and Lincoln provides a strong foundation for wherever it takes you.
