About this course
History is the study of human experience over time, examining how people and societies have made sense of their worlds, how power has been exercised and contested, and how the present has been shaped by choices and events in the past. It is also a training in critical thinking: you learn to interrogate sources, weigh competing interpretations and construct persuasive arguments from incomplete evidence. These are skills with wide application, and studying history teaches you to approach complex problems with curiosity, rigour and an awareness that things could have turned out differently. At the University of Winchester this three-year full-time BA is designed to show how the past connects with today's world, drawing on the expertise of historians who are active researchers as well as committed teachers. You will have the opportunity to explore a broad range of periods, themes and geographies, building both breadth of knowledge and depth in the areas that most interest you. The programme develops your abilities in historical research, source analysis, critical writing and independent inquiry, preparing you not only for further study but for a wide range of careers in which the ability to handle information carefully and communicate clearly is valued. History graduates go on to a remarkably broad range of careers. Many enter fields where historical knowledge is directly relevant, including teaching, heritage, archiving, museum work and public history. Others find roles in journalism, broadcasting, politics, the civil service, law, policy research and the charitable sector. The analytical and writing skills that a history degree develops are valued across almost every professional field, and employers in many sectors actively seek graduates who can think critically, communicate clearly and understand complex contexts. For those wishing to continue academically, the degree provides excellent preparation for postgraduate study in history, public history, archive studies or related humanities disciplines.
