BA History (With Foundation Year)
About this course
History at Liverpool Hope is a degree that enables you to follow your intellectual passions across the full breadth of the past, developing the analytical, research, and writing skills that make historians such versatile graduates. The ability to locate and interpret evidence, construct well-supported arguments, question assumptions, and communicate complex ideas clearly in writing are capabilities that history at degree level builds to a high standard, and they are valued across many professional fields. At Liverpool Hope University, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year that is designed as a genuine opportunity, not a remedial addition, for students who have the ability and enthusiasm to study for a degree but do not yet have the qualifications required to enter directly. A significant part of the foundation year focuses on core academic skills: academic writing at higher education level, becoming an independent learner, structuring academic work, critical thinking, time management, and note-taking. These skills provide the foundation for success in the main degree, which then develops your historical knowledge and analytical capabilities across periods and themes that interest you most. A sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placements are all part of the full programme, giving you direct professional experience and an international dimension. With a typical entry tariff of 88 UCAS points, this programme offers a genuinely supported route into history for students who might otherwise not access higher education. Graduates pursue careers in education, the civil service, heritage and museums, law, journalism, publishing, broadcasting, politics, international development, and the many analytical and communication-intensive roles where the skills of a historian are valued. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in history, public history, archival science, or related disciplines.
