MA(SocSci) History/Business and Management
About this course
History and business and management is a pairing that combines the analytical depth and long-range perspective of historical study with the practical and conceptual knowledge of how organisations function and are led. At first glance the two subjects may seem distant from each other, but they share important concerns: both ask how decisions are made, how institutions develop and change over time, what the consequences of choices are, and how context shapes what is possible. Historical training develops the analytical habits that make business education more critical and reflective, while business knowledge gives historical study a set of applied frameworks that sharpen questions about how past organisations and economies actually worked. At Glasgow this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, adding international perspective to your development in both disciplines. The history component offers a wide-ranging programme from medieval to modern times and across the globe, drawing on research expertise in Scottish, British, European, American, and global history alongside specialisms in slavery studies, gender history, and war and intelligence studies. The breadth of Glasgow's history provision means you can follow your own intellectual interests while building a strong common foundation in historical method and analysis. The business and management component develops your understanding of organisations, strategy, marketing, finance, and the management of people in complex environments. Graduates of this combination find careers in management, business strategy, consultancy, journalism, heritage, the civil service, policy, education, and a wide range of organisations where the combination of analytical depth and practical business knowledge is valued. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in history, business, or related social science fields, or pursue professional qualifications in management, finance, or public administration.
