MA History/Latin
About this course
History and Latin is a combination that offers both the breadth of modern historical scholarship and the linguistic access to the primary sources that connect medieval and early modern history to the ancient world. Latin was the language of scholarship, administration, law, and the church across Europe for more than a millennium, and its literature encompasses some of the greatest writing in any language, from Virgil and Cicero to Augustine and Aquinas. Learning Latin while studying history means you can engage with documents, chronicles, and texts in their original form, developing a level of historical depth that translation alone cannot provide. At the University of Glasgow, this part-time degree draws on research strengths in both history and classics across a wide-ranging programme spanning medieval to modern times and covering Scottish, British, European, US, and global history, as well as specialisms in slavery studies, gender history, and war, intelligence, and genocide studies. You will develop expertise in both the analytical methods of historical study and the linguistic skills of Latin, combining them in ways that are particularly valuable for anyone interested in the history of medieval Europe, the early modern period, church history, or the classical tradition. A year abroad is available. History and Latin graduates bring a distinctive combination of historical breadth, linguistic precision, and analytical rigour to their careers. Many go on to academic research in history or classics, to careers in heritage, archival work, education, and the church, or to professional life in law, the civil service, journalism, and the third sector. The classical training Latin provides is also valued in any field that requires close attention to the meanings and origins of language.
