About this course

Horticulture is the science and practice of growing plants for food, ornament, and environmental benefit, encompassing the cultivation of vegetables, fruit, flowers, trees, and turf across domestic, commercial, and public landscapes. It draws on plant biology, soil science, ecology, and the practical craft of growing to address questions of food production, biodiversity, urban greening, landscape design, and the management of gardens, parks, and natural environments. As interest in sustainable food systems, urban agriculture, and the environmental benefits of green spaces grows, the knowledge and skills of trained horticulturists are increasingly valued. At Anglia Ruskin University, this programme is delivered part time, which makes it well suited to those who are already working in horticulture or related fields, or who are pursuing other commitments alongside their studies. Part-time study is offered over either four or six years, giving you flexibility in how you pace your progression through the degree. You will cover the same academic content as full-time students, including plant science, pest and disease management, growing techniques, horticultural business, and the environmental context of horticulture, building a thorough and practically grounded understanding of the discipline. Graduates work in commercial horticulture including market gardening and fruit and vegetable production, public parks and garden management, landscape design and maintenance, amenity horticulture for local authorities and estates, garden centres and nurseries, and conservation and environmental management. The flexibility that part-time study provides means that many graduates are already established in the sector when they complete the degree, using the qualification to deepen their knowledge and to progress into more senior or technical roles. Further professional development is available through organisations such as the Royal Horticultural Society for those who wish to build on their qualification within the profession.
