BA Illustration with Integrated Foundation Year
About this course
Illustration is a discipline that sits at the junction between art and communication, using image-making to convey ideas, tell stories, document the world, and shape how readers and viewers understand what they see. It is one of the most varied creative fields: illustrators work in children's books, editorial and magazine publishing, advertising, fashion, animation, graphic novels, medical and scientific communication, surface design, and the digital spaces of apps, games and social media. The common thread is the ability to generate powerful, purposeful visual ideas and to realise them with skill and intention. At the University of Northampton, this four-year full-time programme includes an Integrated Foundation Year, which provides an accessible route into the degree for students who want an additional year of creative and academic preparation before engaging with the full honours curriculum. The foundation year is designed for ambitious, driven students who are ready to develop their practice and their understanding of the creative industries, setting them up for the main programme where you will refine your visual language, develop your technical range across media, and build a professional portfolio. You will engage with the history and theory of illustration, the contemporary context of visual communication, and the practical realities of working as an illustrator in a competitive and evolving industry. Graduates of illustration programmes work as freelance illustrators, often developing specialisms in particular sectors or media: children's publishing, editorial, fashion, animation, or digital platforms. Others move into graphic design, art direction, concept art for games and film, surface pattern design, and arts education. Many develop portfolio careers that combine commercial illustration with personal or gallery-based work. Postgraduate study in illustration, visual communication, or related disciplines is available for those who want to develop their practice further.
