BSc Information Technology
About this course
Information technology is the discipline concerned with how computing systems, networks, software, and data are designed, deployed, and managed to meet the needs of organisations and their users. While computer science focuses on the theoretical and mathematical foundations of computing, information technology takes a more applied orientation, asking how technology can be configured, integrated, and managed to solve real organisational problems. IT professionals design and maintain the infrastructure that organisations depend on, manage data and information systems, ensure security and reliability, and increasingly lead digital transformation projects. At London South Bank University, this programme is available on a part-time basis, making it accessible for those who are already working in technology or related fields and wish to formalise and deepen their knowledge alongside professional practice. You will gain hands-on experience with industry-standard software, operating systems, high-performance computing environments, and emerging technologies in areas including AI, data engineering, and cyber security. The curriculum develops both technical competency and the project management and analytical skills that IT professionals use in practice. The programme includes a sandwich year and work placement opportunities, embedding professional experience into your academic development. Graduates from information technology programmes work in systems administration, network management, IT project management, data management, cyber security, and digital transformation roles across every sector of the economy. The practical orientation of the degree makes graduates immediately useful to employers, and the London context provides excellent industry connections. Many graduates go on to further study in specialised areas of computing, or pursue professional certifications in areas such as cloud computing, security, or data management.
