BA Interior Architecture and Design
About this course
Interior Architecture and Design is a discipline concerned with the planning, design, and transformation of interior spaces, addressing both the functional and the experiential dimensions of the built environment. Interior architects work at the boundary between architecture, design, and human psychology, creating environments for living, working, retail, hospitality, and culture that are beautiful, functional, and responsive to the needs of their users. The discipline draws on spatial thinking, materials knowledge, technical drawing, environmental design, and an understanding of how people inhabit and move through spaces. At Sheffield Hallam University, this full-time, three-year programme includes a foundation year and a sandwich year, as well as work placement opportunities. You will learn creatively as part of an inclusive studio community, working alongside industry specialists who bring professional practice into the educational environment. The curriculum develops both your design thinking and your technical skills, covering spatial composition, materials and finishes, lighting, sustainability, and the technical detailing that turns creative ideas into buildable environments. The sandwich year gives you substantial professional experience in an interior architecture or design practice, building the portfolio and professional networks that are essential for a career in this highly competitive field. Graduates of Interior Architecture and Design work as interior architects, interior designers, retail designers, set designers, and spatial consultants across residential, commercial, hospitality, healthcare, and cultural sectors. Many develop careers in design studios and architectural practices, while others work in-house for large organisations with significant interior design requirements. The combination of creative and technical skills the degree develops is also valuable in product design, exhibition design, and the growing field of sustainable design. Postgraduate study in architecture, design, or sustainable environments is a route for those seeking advanced qualifications.
