About this course

Interior architecture and venue design is a discipline concerned with the design of interior spaces, whether domestic, commercial, hospitality, or entertainment environments, with a particular specialism in the distinctive design challenges of venues: spaces built for performance, events, sport, and the live experience economy. Interior architecture differs from interior decoration in its engagement with the structural, technical, and spatial dimensions of design, while venue design adds an additional layer of programming and experiential thinking, asking how spaces can be configured and equipped to serve the specific demands of different live and hosted events. At Derby, this four-year programme includes a foundation year for students who need additional creative or technical preparation before the main degree begins. You will develop skills in spatial design, technical drawing, CAD and digital modelling, materials specification, and the creative concepts that drive effective interior and venue design. The programme is explicitly practice-based, with projects that engage with real design briefs and challenge you to develop, refine, and present resolved proposals. A sandwich year in industry, a year abroad, and a work placement are all incorporated, giving you professional experience in design studios, architecture practices, event venues, or related settings, and the international exposure to broaden your design thinking. Graduates work as interior designers, spatial designers, and venue designers in hospitality, retail, exhibition design, theatre and events, branded environments, and residential design. Derby's connections with the regional and national design industry support career entry, and the combination of interior architecture skills and venue design specialism is distinctive in a competitive graduate market. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in architecture, design, or event management.
