BA Interior Architecture & Spatial Design
About this course
Interior architecture and spatial design is the discipline concerned with the spaces people inhabit: how they are configured, what materials and light they employ, how they serve their users' needs, and what experience they create. Interior architects work at the intersection of architecture, design, and the human sciences, designing environments for living, working, retail, hospitality, healthcare, and culture that are both functional and meaningful. The field requires creative vision combined with technical knowledge of materials, structure, building regulations, and construction methods. At Northampton this three-year full-time degree gives you the opportunity to develop as a visual communicator and spatial designer with a questioning, individual approach. You will develop skills in visual communication, spatial design, and professional practice, building both the creative and technical competencies that interior architecture demands. The programme combines studio-based project work with theoretical and historical study, asking you to engage critically with the relationship between design and the human experience of space, and connecting your work to wider social, cultural, and ethical contexts. The programme develops you as a creative professional ready for practice in the built environment sector. Graduates go on to careers as interior architects, spatial designers, interior designers, set designers, retail designers, and in roles with architecture firms, design consultancies, furniture companies, hospitality groups, and retail organisations. The skills you develop are also valued in exhibition design, event design, and the broader experience economy. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in interior architecture, spatial design, or architecture, developing specialist expertise or pursuing professional registration routes in the built environment professions.
