BSc Interior Architecture
About this course
Interior architecture is a discipline concerned with the design and transformation of interior spaces, addressing how existing buildings can be reimagined and reconfigured to serve new purposes while remaining safe, functional, and spatially intelligent. It is particularly relevant in the context of cities where available space is constrained and where the challenge of finding imaginative and sustainable uses for existing buildings is central to how urban environments evolve. Interior architects work at the boundary between architecture and design, combining structural thinking with aesthetic sensibility and a thorough understanding of how people experience and use space. At the University of Salford, this three-year full-time programme positions you as part of the solution to the vital urban challenge of creating better spaces within existing buildings. You will study spatial design, technical drawing and construction, digital modelling, materials and finishes, environmental systems, and the history and theory of interior design. Sustainability is woven through the programme, reflecting the growing importance of responsible design practice in how interiors are specified and built. Salford's location in Greater Manchester gives you access to a rich urban environment and a built landscape full of buildings at every stage of their lives, from historic industrial structures to contemporary commercial and residential developments. You will develop both creative and technical capabilities, building a portfolio of design work that demonstrates your spatial thinking and professional competence. Graduates go on to work as interior architects and designers in architectural practices, interior design studios, hospitality design, retail design, and the residential sector. Many pursue professional membership of relevant design institutes. Postgraduate study in interior design, architecture, or sustainability is an option for those wishing to develop specialist expertise.
