About this course

Interior design is the discipline of shaping interior environments to serve human needs with intelligence, beauty and sustainability. It encompasses the planning of space, the selection of materials and finishes, the design of lighting and the coordination of all the elements that together determine how a room, a building or a public environment feels and functions. Interior designers work across residential, commercial, hospitality, retail and cultural contexts, responding to the needs of clients and users while bringing creative and technical expertise to the transformation of space. At the University of Brighton, this three-year full-time programme combines creative vision with practical innovation to prepare you for careers that transform how people experience spaces, from homes and workplaces to retail and cultural environments. The programme includes a foundation year that builds the creative, technical and critical foundations you need before the main degree begins, and a sandwich year that gives you extended professional experience in an interior design context. A work placement is also part of the programme, further strengthening your professional preparation and giving you direct insight into how interior design operates commercially. You will develop skills in spatial design, technical drawing, materials knowledge, digital visualisation and project management alongside the critical and conceptual thinking that enables you to approach design briefs with both imagination and rigour. Graduates pursue careers across the full range of interior design practice, including residential and commercial design, retail and visual merchandising, hospitality and hotel design, set design, exhibition design and property development. The combination of creative skill and technical competence developed through the programme is also valuable in architecture, product design, brand consultancy and the creative industries more broadly. Some graduates pursue postgraduate study in interior architecture, spatial design or design management, while others move directly into professional practice.
