BA International Relations and Sociology
About this course
International relations and sociology together provide a layered framework for understanding the forces that shape human societies both within and across national borders. International relations examines the behaviour of states, international organisations, and transnational actors, addressing questions of conflict, cooperation, trade, security, and global governance. Sociology analyses the social structures, institutions, inequalities, and cultural processes that organise life within societies. Combined, they give you the tools to understand both the global context and the social realities on the ground. At the University of Derby, this three-year full-time programme adopts a transdisciplinary approach, meaning you are consistently encouraged to think across both disciplines rather than treating them as separate. The programme includes a foundation year, making it accessible to students who need additional preparation before degree-level study, as well as a sandwich year and work placement, which provide valuable professional experience. You will engage with topics such as global inequality, migration, geopolitics, social policy, conflict and peacebuilding, and the dynamics of power at both global and local levels. The programme develops research skills, critical thinking, and the ability to communicate complex social and political ideas to different audiences. Derby's programme is designed with graduate employability clearly in mind, and the placement experience gives you practical professional context for your academic learning. Graduates are well placed for careers in international development, NGOs, the civil service, social policy, community organisations, journalism, research, and global business. The analytical and communication skills the degree develops are valued wherever organisations need people who can think about complex social and political questions. The degree also provides a platform for postgraduate study in international relations, sociology, or social policy.
