About this course
International relations is the study of how states, international organisations, and other actors interact in the global arena. It examines the causes of conflict and cooperation, the dynamics of security and power, the politics of the global economy, and the international norms and institutions through which states attempt to manage their relationships. In a world of intensifying geopolitical competition, climate negotiation, migration, and transnational governance challenges, understanding how the international system works has never been more important. At the University of Essex, you will examine how states, organisations, and individuals interact on the global stage, exploring themes including conflict, security, globalisation, political economy, and regional politics. You will engage with the major theoretical traditions in international relations, including realism, liberalism, constructivism, and critical theory, developing the analytical frameworks to interpret international events and policy choices with nuance and depth. You will also grapple with today's most pressing international challenges, from nuclear proliferation and humanitarian intervention to economic inequality and the politics of climate change. Essex has a strong reputation in politics and international studies, with research that engages directly with the questions the degree explores. Through a blend of theory and innovative teaching, you will develop the analytical skills to understand and evaluate competing explanations of international behaviour. You will also build strong research, writing, and argumentation skills, learning to engage with academic literature and to produce clear, evidence-based analysis of your own. Graduates from international relations programmes pursue careers in diplomacy, the civil service, international organisations such as the UN and EU, NGOs, think tanks, journalism, defence and security, finance, and international business.
