BA International Relations
About this course
International relations is the study of how states, organisations, and other actors interact across borders, and of the forces, whether power, economics, ideology, culture, or law, that shape those interactions. It asks why conflicts begin and how they end, what drives cooperation between nations, how international institutions are built and whether they work, and what role non-state actors from multinational corporations to NGOs play in global affairs. It is a discipline that combines political science, history, economics, and international law to address some of the most consequential questions of our time. At Portsmouth you will examine the major issues affecting the contemporary world, including conflict, diplomacy, human rights, development, trade, climate change, and the role of international organisations. You will engage with competing theoretical frameworks that explain how the international system works, and you will develop research skills, analytical writing, and the ability to understand complex problems from multiple perspectives. The three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year and a year abroad, giving you direct experience of working in an internationally relevant organisation and the chance to study in a different national context, both of which are genuinely valuable for a career in international affairs. Graduates go on to careers in diplomacy and foreign affairs, international organisations and NGOs, government, journalism, humanitarian and development work, international business, security analysis, and research. The combination of political analysis, global awareness, and research skills that international relations develops is sought after in any role that involves engaging with the world beyond national borders. Postgraduate study in international relations, security studies, development, or law is a common next step.
