BA International Relations with Politics
About this course
International relations and politics addresses the questions that shape the world beyond national borders: how states pursue their interests, how international institutions manage cooperation and conflict, how security dilemmas arise and are resolved, and how the global economy, human rights frameworks, and environmental challenges create interdependencies that no state can manage alone. At Leeds Beckett University, the part-time BA International Relations with Politics includes a year abroad, giving you direct international experience that deepens your understanding of the discipline from the inside. The international relations component introduces you to the major theoretical frameworks through which scholars and practitioners analyse how states and other actors behave in the international system. Realism, liberalism, constructivism, and critical approaches to international relations all provide different and complementary lenses on the same phenomena: war and peace, cooperation and defection, trade and economic interdependence, and the role of international law and organisations in managing global affairs. The politics component adds the domestic dimension, asking how political institutions within states shape what governments do internationally, and how political ideologies and electoral pressures interact with foreign policy. Together, the two subjects develop a sophisticated and multilevel understanding of political life. Graduates of international relations and politics programmes move into careers in the civil service, international organisations, journalism and media, think tanks and policy institutes, the charity and development sector, diplomacy, international business, and public affairs. The analytical and research skills the combination develops, alongside the international awareness demonstrated by the year abroad, are consistently valued by employers in these fields. The part-time mode makes the degree accessible to students who cannot commit to full-time study. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in international relations, politics, law, or security studies, where the theoretical and analytical foundation the programme provides is an important preparation. The degree equips you to engage seriously with the global political challenges that will define the careers of those entering professional life now.
