BA International Tourism Management
About this course
International tourism management is the study of one of the world's largest and most complex service industries, examining how tourism is organised, marketed, managed, and made sustainable across the globe. Tourism involves the movement of hundreds of millions of people every year, creating economic value for destinations and communities while also generating significant environmental, social, and cultural pressures. Managing this industry well requires both business expertise and an understanding of the political, ecological, and social contexts in which tourism operates. At University College Birmingham, this part-time programme is designed for students who want to develop professional knowledge and skills while maintaining other commitments, whether that is existing employment in hospitality or tourism, family responsibilities, or a combination of both. The curriculum covers the major dimensions of tourism management, including destination marketing and management, tourism planning and development, sustainable tourism, cultural and heritage tourism, and the management of hospitality and visitor experiences. The business dimensions of operations management, marketing, and financial planning are developed alongside the sector-specific knowledge that distinguishes tourism management from a general business degree. The programme includes a sandwich year in industry and work placement opportunities, providing professional experience in tourism, hospitality, or events organisations that complements the academic learning. Graduates find careers across the tourism and hospitality industry in roles including destination management, tour operations, hotel and accommodation management, visitor attraction management, and tourism development. National and regional tourism organisations, convention and visitor bureaux, heritage bodies, and sustainable tourism initiatives provide public and third-sector opportunities. Airline and transport companies, cruise lines, and travel agencies are further employers. The combination of management skills and tourism knowledge is also valued in property development and planning, where tourism and hospitality uses form part of larger regeneration and development projects. Some graduates continue to postgraduate study in tourism, hospitality, or business management.
